Root Canal Treatment (Endodontics)

What is Root Canal Treatment (Endodontics)?

Root canal treatment (RCT) is a procedure that aims to save a tooth that is considered diseased, infected, or damaged.

Why is a Root Canal Treatment required?

Every tooth consists of a nerve, if this nerve becomes exposed to bacteria, it becomes inflamed or infected. This often leads to extreme sensitivity or pain. Other previous dental treatments (e.g. deep fillings, cracks, or crowns) can also cause the nerve within the tooth to be infected and may require RCT in an attempt to save the tooth prior to extraction.

What does Root Canal Treatment involve?

Your dentist will initially attempt to numb the area around the tooth (this stage can be difficult when a tooth is infected). The infected nerve area is then removed from the canal(s) and disinfected thoroughly to remove most of the bacteria causing the infection. The tooth is then filled. It is important to remember, although RCT is a great option to save the tooth, the tooth is now weaker following this treatment. Therefore, it is often advised to have additional protection to seal the tooth following RCT, e.g. crown or onlay.

How many appointments are required?

This is dependent on how severe the infection is. It usually requires 1 or 2 appointments.

What happens if I choose to do nothing?

An infected tooth can result in significant pain and possible swelling. If left untreated, it can lead to further (potentially) life-threatening complications.

Please note: If Root Canal Treatment is deemed more complex, you may be advised to see a specialist (Endodontist) for best long-term results.
