Dental Fillings: Restore and Protect Your Teeth
Explore Your Options for Dental Fillings: Composite, Amalgam, and Glass Ionomer Cement
What is a dental filling?
A dental filling is a way to treat a hole (cavity) or chip in a tooth. It restores function and look of the tooth. The dentist has many filling materials to choose from and your dentist will advise on which filling material is best for the clinical scenario.
Composite: A ‘white’ coloured filling material. The dentist, nurse and the individual undergoing treatment can choose the correct shade of tooth coloured filling material to best match the tooth undergoing treatment. In best clinical scenarios, the filling will camouflage within the tooth, becoming invisible.
Amalgam: A ‘silver’ coloured filing material. First used since the 1800’s, this material is proven in dentistry for being strong and robust. Amalgam fillings are often used on individuals with a high risk for developing dental decay.
Glass Ionomer Cement: especially developed to release fluoride into the surrounding tooth to prevent decay from getting worse.
