Tooth Cuspal Protection for Restorative Dentistry

How We Use Tooth Cuspal Protection to Preserve Your Natural Teeth

What does cuspal protection mean?

Cuspal protection refers to ‘building’ up broken teeth. This could be in the form of inlays/ onlays or crowns. Usually over two appointments, first, the dentist prepares the tooth to make sure that the tooth is strong enough, impressions are taken and sent to a dental laboratory. The second appointment is usually two weeks later and involves fitting the item onto the tooth. It’s important to note that the individual undergoing the treatment has a temporary crown for the two weeks.

The lab technician who designs the crown can intricately add details to match neighbouring teeth, focusing on dental aesthetics. Here at Bedford Place Dentist, we are proudly supplied by a local family run dental laboratory who are happy to meet and discuss clinical cases. This makes sure that tooth colour and contour of crowns are perfectly crafted.

What materials are used?

There are various materials which can be chosen for cuspal protection, each with different properties, including aesthetics, strength, and adherence to teeth. The best material will depend on the clinical scenario, and this will be discussed during dental examination.
